Brain January is Alzheimer Awareness Month

The Alzheimer Society of Canada report projects that there were 103,728 new cases of Alzheimer's or related dementias in 2008 in Canada.  That is one person every five minutes!  Also in 2008 there were 480,618 or 1.5% of the Canadian population with dementia.  And these numbers are expected to grow.

There are steps you can'take to prevent dementia.

  • Increase physical activity to increase oxygen supply to the brain
  • Challenge your brain with puzzles and crosswords, read a book or join a book club, learn to play a musical instrument, change your routine
  • Stay socially active
  • Make healthy food choices, especially a Mediterranean-style diet
