Why breastfeeding is good for babies and mommies…
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year in August to help encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. Breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants start breastfeeding within one hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for six months. Breastfeeding should be continued for up to two years after introducing nutritious complementary foods.
But it's not just babies that benefit from breastfeeding - mothers and by extension our whole community benefits when babies are breastfed.
Here are some great reasons to breastfeed your baby:
- Breast milk is the perfect food for babies, chock-full of nutrients and antibodies
- Breast milk is easy to digest and may lessen allergies
- Breast milk helps develop brain power
- Breast milk is convenient and portable – and always at the right temperature
- Breastfeeding saves money – no formula to buy
- Breastfeeding promotes bonding between mother and child
- Breastfeeding provides some protection against breast/ovarian cancer & osteoporosis
- Breastfeeding is also good for the environment – no unnecessary packaging & pollution
