The ‘other’ belly ache: IBS

MC900092793[1] More than six million Canadians suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Also known as irritable or spastic colon, IBS is a gastrointestinal disorder causing abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating and altered bowel movement (constipation, diarrhea, or a combination of the two). The cause of IBS is unknown and there is no cure at the present time. IBS affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. Women represent 70 percent of IBS sufferers in Canada.

Symptoms are often chronic and range from mild to moderate to severe. The good news is that IBS does not harm the intestines. The bad news is that IBS is a debilitating condition that can significantly impact the quality of life of IBS sufferers. In Canada, IBS is the second-leading cause of absenteeism from work or school, after the common cold.

There are no specific tests for IBS. Diagnosis is usually based on your medical history. However, your doctor may run tests to be sure you don't have other diseases. Most people can control their IBS symptoms with diet, stress management and medications.

  1. I strongly believe that the most important aspect of maintaining a healthy diet isn’t the type of diet you choose, but whether or not you can stick to it. Everyone who follows a diet has times when it is tough to stay motivated and that is when it is just too easy to give up.
