Laser Eye Surgery

LASIKNo need to explain how important our eyes are. Just think … every morning the first thing we do after we wake up – we open our eyes, before resuming our daily routines. Just imagine for a moment how challenging it would be if we couldn't see or see well?

With healthy eyes we not only see better, but also feel better, and look better. Eyes are the windows to our souls. They reflect our spiritual wellness as well. No wonder why so many people prefer contact lenses to glasses and are risking potential complications of eye surgery to correct their eye sights!

Laser eye surgery (also known as LASIK) is an outpatient surgical procedure which takes approximately 30 minutes or less to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A laser is used to reshape the cornea — the clear, round dome at the front of the eye — to improve the way the eye focuses light rays onto the retina at the back of the eye.

During this procedure, an ophthalmologist creates a thin flap in the cornea using either a blade or a laser. The surgeon folds back the flap and removes a very specific amount of corneal tissue under the flap using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back into its original position where it heals in place.

If it's that simple and easy, why are so many people still wearing glasses? Cost is part of the reason. Another reason is that not everyone is suitable for the surgery, and even for the right candidate the surgical outcome could be disappointing.
