Whew! So glad turkeys are not on the recall list

MP900409576[1] With Thanksgiving just around the corner it's comforting to know that turkeys are not on Health Canada's recall list. As you no doubt have heard in the news, there is a massive recall of beef products from an Alberta plant due to E-coli contamination.

Feasting on turkeys is a time-honoured tradition at Thanksgiving. According to Industry Statistics, Canadians consumed 143.4 million kg (Mkg) of turkey in 2011…that's a whopping per capita consumption of 4.2 kg!! While not all of it was consumed at Thanksgiving, 3.0 million whole turkeys were purchased by Canadians for Thanksgiving 2011.

The next big question is how to prepare the festive bird and the trimmings… Can you cook it frozen? Or should you stuff it or not stuff it? The library has many good cookbooks with mouthwatering recipes that you can check out. But play it safe and check out the Mayo Clinic's safety tips… among them

  • cook the bird in the oven
  • it takes longer to cook a frozen turkey
  • always use a meat thermometer to check when it's ready for consumption
  • this applies also to the stuffing!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
