Diabetes… a (not so) sweet story
November 14th has been designated a World Diabetes Day and the campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). This got me thinking about my connection to this condition. It has been about ten years ago since my dad nearly slipped into a diabetic coma and was rushed to hospital with a sugar count of over 60 – a normal count is 7. Since then, I've watched him turn to a very regimented discipline which includes insulin shots twice daily. I have shared this story with far too many who identify as diabetics or are coming to terms with their diagnosis. Dealing with the harsh reality that one will have to make radical lifestyle changes in order to survive can be devastating and also impacts their loved ones.
The City of Toronto's Website has a Diabetes Prevention page dedicated to information on services and resources for diabetes. There are over 1000 items in the Toronto Public Library's catalogue. Below is a list of books, cookbooks and websites to help manage and learn more about diabetes.
