Confession time: I spend more time choosing the colour of a lipstick than looking at the list of ingredients. Perhaps that's because the print is so small on the labels, but that's a topic for another day.

I don't deliberately have my head in the sand. For example, I am aware that some ingredients, such as triclosan, are in everyday products and may not be the best for us, healthwise.

If you enjoy learning by listening, come to North York Central Library to enjoy a 3-part series on cosmetic ingredients. Louise Hidinger has a PhD in chemistry and has applied her knowledge and field of study to beauty products. It is recommended that people without a science background attend the first session on January 13. Terminology and concepts will be explained in the first session, then built upon in the following sessions. Please register by calling the Science & Technology Dept of North York Central Library at 416-395-5649 as seating is limited.

If you prefer reading, take a gander at the following titles:

Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me by Paula Begoun

A consumer's dictionary of cosmetic ingredients by Ruth Winter

No more dirty looks by Siobhan O'Connor
