12,000 Canaries Can’t Be Wrong

Miners used to bring caged canaries with them into the coal mines. If there were any dangerous gases, the canaries would die before the miners and thus the miners would be warned that they should vacate the mines. Now the term canary in a coal mine refers to "something whose sensitivity to adverse conditions makes it a useful early indicator of such conditions; something which warns of the coming of greater danger or trouble by a deterioration in its health or welfare" (wiktionary.org).

The evidence for the link between health and the environment is growing. The website The Collaborative on Health and the Environment has a toxicant and disease database which lists the strength of evidence for a toxicant as a cause of a disease.

Dr. John MolotIn his book, 12,000 Canaries Can't Be Wrong, environmental medicine specialist, Dr. John Molot explains how the environment contributes to the development and progression of many common conditions and illnessesDr. Molot will be speaking about the environmental impact on our health and what we can do about it at North York Central Library on December 2, 2015 at 7 pm.
