Exercise for Your Mental Health: One Step at a Time

The evidence for the mental health benefits of exercise continues to grow. As my colleague Jeannette mentioned in her post Your Brain on Exercise: How Physical Activity Can Improve Your Mental Well-being, exercise plays a role in brain health.  Recent research shows:

  • increasing the physical activity of widows "energized their mental status, improved sleep quality and quantity, reduced depressions and the need for psychoactive drugs"1
  • there are low levels of the neurotransmitters, glutamate and gamma-amniobutyric acid (GABA), in depressive disorders but these levels increase during intense exercise2
  • aerobic exercise improves memory3

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Catherine Sabiston who is the Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Mental Health at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Sabiston will discuss the latest research in this field and provide suggestions on how to get moving.
