Best of the Bunch: Top Apps for Handheld Librarians
At the recent Handheld Librarian IV online conference, Scott Brown from Social Information Group held a session covering his top 40 apps for the iPhone/iPad and Android OS. A few were too U.S. centric for our uses (e.g. government tax codes), but here are the ones well worth checking out:
- iBooks
- Kindle
- Buzz Deck
- Reuters News Pro
- Black's Law Dictionary
- GoodReads
- Issuu Mobile
- Scan2PDF Mobile
- Dragon Dictation
- Dropbox
- GoodReader
- Evernote
- wi-fi Finder
- Curator HD
- My6sense
- MobileRSS
- Skype
- Tweetdeck
- HootSuite
- AnyPost
- Qik
- STFoneUp
- urbanspoon
- daytrotter
- SoundHound
- Netflix
- RunPee Mobile
- FlySmart
- CarLocator
- TalkToMe
- Foursquare
- Gowalla
- Layar
- SitOrSquat
- Aloqa
- unhearit
- Draft
- hipstamatic
Not all of these are free apps, by the way, and not all are work related. However, they do give you a good sense of what is popular with our more techy users, and are a great way to at least appear to be cool and hip. Try working these apps into sentences. I suggest, "Who's up for doing some tweetdecking, hootsuite?"

I’ve been using HootSuite for a few weeks now to update the TRL Facebook Page. It’s turned out to be a terrific tool for scheduling content in advance. All of the TRL programming content on the TRL FB Page is done this way. Check it out: http://www.facebook.com/torontoreferencelibrary
Thanks “Out of Print”, I’ve heard of most of the items on your list, even tried a few, but I will check into the rest. Cheers! DC
