Moving to a new country is daunting. Aside from trying to get accustomed to the climate (Brrr, it is cold here!), you are trying to find a job in your field and make a new life for yourself within the Canadian culture. The latter will take some time to achieve.

Here are some free programs offered at various Toronto Public Libraries:

English Conversation Circle
This is a terrific opportunity to improve your English language skills! These programs are offered jointly by the library and CultureLink, a non-profit organization that helps newcomers settle in Canada. Volunteers and newcomers meet weekly for two hours to discuss a variety of topics. So what can you gain from this? Well, you can develop conversation skills, make new contacts, and learn about the library’s resources and services.

Settlement Services
Settlement workers are available at different Toronto Public Libraries to help you with settlement related issues such as job searches, English classes, health issues, legal advice (They do not provide the legal advice; they will refer you to appropriate agencies.), childcare and school information, banking, housing, citizenship, and immigration. Offered in many languages, this program is available year-round with different schedules in different library branches. Check the Toronto Public Library’s website, http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/mul_index.jsp under Multicultural Resources.

English as a Second Language Classes (ESL)
A number of Toronto public libraries offer classes to help you improve your English language skills and learn about Canadian culture. These programs are co-sponsored by the Toronto District and the Toronto Catholic district school boards. Check the library’s website for more information.

Citizenship Classes
These classes will help you prepare for the Canadian Citizenship test. Topics include Canadian history, geography and government. Check the Toronto Public Library’s website for more details about citizenship classes.
