Volunteering Can Get You A Job

September 26, 2009 | Elle | Comments (1)

After I finished graduate school, I began looking for a (paid) job in my new field. I found a volunteer position, working a couple of days per week in a consumer health information centre at a Toronto hospital. During that period, I met many professionals who also worked in the library/information services field. Someone recommended me for a position in a government library. One connection/contract led to another and here I am!

Volunteering can put you in a position where you can meet influential people and market your skills. Try volunteering at conferences – I did that and met a lot of the movers and shakers in the information services/library field! So start by surfing the net and talking to conference organizers. In every industry there is one or more conferences that serve as a way for like-minded people to get together. Make sure you are among them. Once you are there, the rest is up to you!
