The Alberta Learning Information Service, a Government of Alberta initiative, provides information for career planning, post-secondary education and training, educational funding, job search, labour market trends, and workplace issues. I was exploring their site the other day and spotted a tip sheet on 13 ways to be a valued employee. Well, after reading more on this topic, here is a list of some other qualities that employers would look for.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively – in listening, speaking, and writing.
  2. Intelligence – able to generate ideas and solve problems.
  3. Initiative – not waiting until someone asks you to do something, work with minimal supervision.
  4. High energy level – a willingness to work hard and display enthusiasm, especially when the going gets tough.
  5. Handle conflict – good stress management skills, as well as an ability to balance competition and cooperation.
  6. Flexibility – receptive to new ideas and able to accept change, especially on short notice.
  7. Accept responsibility – able to accept a task and accept constructive criticism.
  8. Interpersonal skills – ability to get along with others and bring out the best in others, even if they are different from you.
  9. Vocational Skills – technical skills required in your chosen field.
  10. Self-knowledge – able to realistically assess your own capabilities and limitations.

Here are some books to have a look at!
