What To Wear and What Not To Wear to Your Interview

A company executive I talked to recently said that if you want to be one of them, you will have to look like one of them. While individuality is important (and certainly, this can and should come out in the quality of your work), when you are going for an interview, it is important to look sensitive, conservative and upscale, not flashy.

I have a conservative, smart-looking WIF (wedding-interview-funeral) suit. It is an expensive black, light-weight, single-breasted wool suit – jacket and skirt (no pants allowed!)

Remember, you want to get the interviewer to like you, listen to you and invite you back for a second interview or better yet, offer you a job! While they say that clothes do not make the woman/man, what else are they going to go by, in terms of first impressions?

For men, wear your best business suit plus a white shirt, clean, well-pressed, and complemented by a solid, striped, or conservatively patterned necktie in silk. Save the dark, or patterned dress shirts for when you are hired. Wear dark socks and a plain, dark belt, and leather dress shoes, well shined with new laces.

For women, wear your best business suit plus a clean, well-pressed cream or white blouse. A simple necklace is also a good idea. Wear a pair of matching shoes in mid-height heels and neutral beige or taupe stockings.

What should you not wear? Well, pretty much anything you would wear to a casual or informal function. No golf shirts, patterned jackets, running shoes, sandals, boots, open-toed shoes, spike heels, tight skirts, flashy hair accessories, excessive jewellery, chains, and earrings. I would not even wear pearl stud earrings!
