2009 saw a lot of pink slips handed out on Bay Street. As the global economy felt the impact of the sub-prime crisis, 325,000 jobs disappeared in the financial sector worldwide. Today, things are different and the jobs are back. Big bonus cheques were handed out at Canadian banks in 2010. Bank of Montreal saw their bonus pool increase by 24%. Royal Bank's pool was $1.87 billion, up 10 per cent.
Types of jobs on Bay Street include Equity Research Analyst/Associate, Investment Banking Analyst, Institutional Sales Associate, Broker, Portfolio Analyst, etc. I myself spent 10 years working in the library of a major investment bank assisting analysts in Mergers & Acquisitions, Equity Research, Diversified Industries, and other banking groups with their research. It was, and is a fast-paced, challenging environment where working long hours and weekends is not uncommon.
