To Be A Pilot in Canada

Client came in the other day and asked me, "How do I become a Pilot?"

Good question!

We soon found out that Canada has 4 types of Pilot Licenses that you can hold:

  • Recreational Pilot Permit
  • Private Pilot's License
  • Commercial Pilot's License
  • Airline Transport Pilot's License

The minimum age to acquire a commercial license in Canada is 18. Even though there is no minimum age to start your flight training, you cannot acquire a private license until you are 17 years old.

In order to fly professionally, you must first obtain your private pilot license. This license can be done at a flight school and takes several months to complete. Read more about how to select a flying school and find a location to start your training today.

Employment opportunities are expected to be average from 2009 – 2013. As older workers retire, the demand for pilots will increase. In the meantime, many Canadian pilots are being recruited by Asia and the Middle East.

  1. I think the commercial pilot license is where students have trouble following through. Pilot licensing in Canada is regulated by Transport Canada, and the costs of the commercial pilot can be too great for most people’s budgets. The private pilot license can cost anywhere from $7000-$10,000. The Commercial pilot license can cost nearly $40,000.
