Moneyville.ca recently published an article highlighting the sectors with job opportunities in 2011. So you may want to target the following industries when looking for a job or career:

  1. Health Care: "Health care positions – home health care, registered nurses, personal aides, physiotherapists, occupational therapists – these are all in great demand because of the aging population," says Robert Waghorn from Monster.ca.
  2. Technology: This really should not come as a surprise given the tech world we live in. While web designers and developers of mobile applications are always in demand, companies are now looking for experts in social media. Organizations are interested in increasing their online presence through social media networks.
  3. Financial Services: Financial planners, business systems analysts, financial analysts, controllers, accountants, and auditors will be in demand for 2011.
  4. Natural Resources: "Mining is 'gold' for jobs right now," says the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada, with demand for geologists, geophysicists, millwrights, industrial electricians, rig technicians, heavy equipment mechanics, technologists and engineers.
  5. Construction: According to Statistics Canada, this sector has seen gains of 89,000 jobs over the past year. "We don't have enough apprentices to fill the gaps left by older workers leaving," says Brian Mahaffy of Sheridan College. Electricians, carpenters, plumbers, HVAC specialists, and welders will be in demand.
