At any given time of the year, you can find lists of companies that are the "best" places to work.  How are these lists generated?  Are they helpful in assisting you in finding the right fit for your work life?  It depends on what you consider important to YOU.  Is it great benefits?  Is it flexible hours?  On-site daycare?  Most people want a company that will to help them achieve a balance between their home life and their careers.

If you aren't familar with some of the lists that are out there, have a look at these recently compiled  "Bests":

Canada's Top 100 Employers – "Now entering its 12th year, the Canada's Top 100 Employers project is a national competition to determine which employers lead their industries in offering exceptional workplaces for their employees."  You will see lists of top employers by a number of "top" categories including by city, province, diversity,  green, family friendly, New Canadians and more.

Best Workplaces in Canada – A best workplace is defined as " a place where employees "trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they work with".  This includes lists going back to 1984, and lists for other parts of the world.
