Dreaming of a Career as a DJ?

Late night parties. Being the first to find the latest music. Impressing your friends with your skills. These are all things we tend to associate with being a DJ. The glitz and the glam can be enticing. A DJ controls the room with their music. A career as a DJ has increased in popularity with the likes of Tiesto, Deadmau5, and David Guetta becoming household names and earning in the millions for their talent. But where does one start and what is it really like for a local DJ?

DJ Revolution is a Toronto DJ who has played at some of Toronto's hottest clubs, in addition to running his own company. I interview him to get the scoop on what it's really like being behind the turntable.

DJ Revolution

1. State your name and business:

Andrew, owner of Euphoric Entertainment Inc (DJ Services)

2. What inspired you towards this career?

My love for music and my passion to entertain.

3. What is the one thing that surprised you about running your own business?

The logistics behind it. There is a lot of government related paper work that is required to manage/start a successful business in Canada (taxes etc).

4. With quite a bit of competition out there, how do you stand out from the crowd?

Everything has moved online. Having an impressive website is a #1 selling feature to a business. The way you market yourself will set you apart from the rest.

5. What are the top three personality traits you think a future DJ should possess?

1. Willingness to learn.  2. Willingness to adapt. 3. Willingness to network

6. How much do you feel technology has played a part in this industry?

Technology has transformed my industry in more ways than one. Years ago, music was played with records and record players (analog). Now all music is stored on a laptop and played through CD players (Digital) with an industry standard software like Serato.

7. No one likes to talk about salaries, but we are all curious. Would you recommend a job in this industry as a viable way to make a living?

I would recommend this job as an alternate means of income but it's all about how much you put into things. This type of work can be a full-time role depending on how much effort you put in. There is money to be made.

8. What’s the title of the last book/magazine that you’ve read?

  Vibe Magazine

9. I have to ask…what’s your favourite thing about the library?

The resources that are available to help you. They provide several training sessions and knowledge to prepare/educate you.
