Help! I Hate My Job!

A blog about jobs and careers naturally focuses on obtaining a job, advancing in one's job or making your job more satisfying, but what about those people who already have jobs but want to quit? And I'm not talking about when you have one bad day, or if you storm out of the office angry because you just got reprimanded. I mean, people who honest to goodness can't take another day of walking through their office doors. This feeling may occur for various reasons from growing out of the position to feeling unappreciated, but what does a person do in this case?

Question Mark

The common advice is not to leave one job unless you have another one lined-up and most of us can see the logic behind this. Bills still need to be paid, food still needs to be eaten and the cost of living is fairly high in most of the major cities in Canada. But this article from Fortune Magazine provides an opposite perspective, and an interesting one, at that: looking for a new opportunity should become your full-time job. The author shares their own story and goes into detail about what they did once they quit their job in order to obtain another one, and it involved things such as spending time on their resume and networking, and sadly didn't involve having cocktails to celebrate their new-found free time.

This other article discusses how the stigma has lessened over time for job-seekers who are unemployed. Awareness has now been built around fully-qualified people being laid off or even highly educated, new graduates having a hard time finding work. Recruiters no longer look down upon a candidate who is currently out of work.

If instead, you're wavering on the fence and think it might be too risky to just get up and leave, Huffington Post has some suggestions as to things you may want to try before making the official decision to quit.

At the end of the day, the decision is ultimately up to you. Only you know what the best path to take is in your life.
