Best Career For You!

Every time I see a video clip of a graduation ceremony from the movie or news, a thought crosses my mind about their immediate future: will they nail that first real job? They look so happy! Hmm, are they, at all, worried about the job prospect? Are they concerned that whatever career they choose will have a long and prosperous shelf life?

Not just new graduates, there are many of us, young and old, wondering about the future of our career. Is my job safe ten years from now? What is my career going to be like in 20 years? Is my job going to be obsolete even before I retire? A worry bug’s heaven, indeed.

So, what types of jobs have a better future than others? What are the conditions for their longevity or early demise? Well, it seems as if uncertainty is the new normal now. The changes happen at a dizzying pace, which leaves someone like me at a loss. If you can keep up, or, even better, embrace the whirlwind pace of change, the force is with you!

Most experts agree that certain job types are more likely to be around, and thrive, in the near future. These jobs, or careers, can be found in health, information technology, finance, law, and of course, education. With the advancement of information technology, jobs related to all aspects of the Internet and information sector will be popular. Anything else, you ask? How about skilled trades such as plumber and electrician? Of course, they will remain strong for many years to come. How about government jobs? More than ever, governments are one of the largest employer in any country/society.

Some jobs are disappearing too: for example, the advancement of AI — Artificial Intelligence — may play a large role in the demise of some jobs. Although it may be quite a few years away, some experts predict that many number-crunching jobs such as bookkeeping and accounting may go faster that we think. In the same vein, interpreters and translators will have their future cut short. We may also see some of the so called middle class jobs, such as sewers, telemarketers, insurance underwriters, etc. disappear much like the chimney sweepers did.

Your personality matters: a million-dollar-a-year job is not for you if you are not compatible with that type of work. Your job, ideally, should be compatible with your personality for a long run. After all, you are what you work at. Taking that extra step to look for a job that fits you would be beneficial.
