I Need a Job!
I need a job!
That’s a line we always hear from droves of young professionals and graduates fresh out of college or university. They are desperate for a job. Let’s have courage and admit it; this may be a natural consequence of the dark economic times we’re trudging — high unemployment rates.
It’s sad but true, many of these young people have relevant experience, and the prerequisites to boot; however, many are vying for positions too few to count, making the competition cutthroat. As a result, this frequent dismal episode ends up in the unemployment stats. It is, indeed, a difficult time for anyone to find a full-time job that will end up as a meaningful career. The traditional methods and tactics of job-seeking do not seem to work anymore. And difficult times call for creative methods and unorthodox tactics, which push job seekers to think outside the ‘norm’. You will be surprised to see opportunities you have not seen before.
An ideal scenario of your life would be such that, when you graduate from the college or university, you will find a job of your choice, and you will advance up the ladder as your career matures. However, as everyone knows, life does not work that way at all. You would consider yourself fortunate if you can manage to find a job that is remotely close to that.
What do you do? You can’t just sit around home, and wonder, dream, complain and mope. Why not try something more practical and, yet, strange? Odd jobs! Yes, I am talking about that temp job that we all dismiss as if they are for someone else, as well as some very unusual ones that you never thought existed. Degrading, weird, awful, you say? Think again.
If you look around, on the ‘net or many employment sites, you will come across jobs that hit you smack in the face. You will most likely say, ‘Oh, my god! I didn’t know that!’ Then you begin to look, and say, ‘Hmm…’ Intrigued? Here are some of the most unusual jobs I gleamed from many sources:
Submarine cook – In the land down under, working on a sub and cooking.. subs? can earn you over $200,000 per year. Apparen'tly, there are bonuses associated with working in a metal tube.
Casino salesperson in Macau, China – Are you a good salesperson? Convincing high rollers to come to casinos in Macau could earn you up to $5,000 per month.
Pearl diver – A diver can make about $1,300 per day. Watch out for the Great Whites, as most companies will charge a lot for limb insurance.
Gas and oil diver – Do you like diving? Do you like oil and gas? If so, here’s a great job involving both and you could earn about $80,000 per year.
Airplane repo person – I think most people have heard of a repo man (or person). A repo person’s job is to collect items that people buy on credit or use as collateral, such as cars, boats etc. If you default on the loan, these people will come and take your belongings. If you like adventure and are not afraid of being shot or put into foreign prisons, then making up to $900,000 per plane is a great way to make a living.
Bounty hunter – Grow a mullet, find a muscle shirt and a can of pepper spray, and you are set to collect up to $45,000 per bail-skipping criminal that you can bring in. Earning over $100,000 per year catching bad people sounds like fun, and exciting.
Voice-over work – Like the sounds of the pizza advertisement on the radio? Have a great sounding voice? You could earn about $300 for a five-minute advertisement. We would love to work for only five minutes a day.
