Splish! Splash! Read!
Summer is here! Those lazy, hazy days are just perfect for reading – and kids can'take full advantage with the TD Summer Reading Club at libraries across Canada. Every summer, we hatch a whole new summer full of fun, and this year, we've chosen the theme "Splash!"
So what's this summer reading club, and why is it a summer staple for kids?
Summer Reading Club is a fun way to encourage kids to keep reading through the summer, with a little incentive thrown in for those reluctant types. Kids who sign up get a great poster (I love this year's!) and a booklet of activities. They can'then go in to the library to report on books they have read and earn stickers that go on their posters to add little surprises as they read. With 9 stickers to collect, it can keep them going all summer long – a great thing, since kids who don't read for those months can actually lose ground on their progress as readers.
The great thing about being part of a national programme is that if you are going away, you can'take your reading club with you, and though branches may do things a little differently here and there, kids can keep collecting the same set of stickers, wherever they are.
There are online games, jokes, stories, and more on our TD Summer Reading Club website, a safe and activity-packed place for kids on the web. Avid readers and budding writers can even write their own reviews, and may see them on the site!
If you're going to be in the city this summer, not only do we have the reading club, but summer is when we really rev up our programming for kids, so there is bound to be something fun happening in a library near you. Check out our programme listings and jump into summer fun – with a Splash!
