Got that Olympic fever?

With all of the coverage of the London Olympics in the media, your youngsters might be expressing an interest in knowing more about the Olympics in general and certain sports in particular. We have a wealth of resources at Toronto Public Library that can answer these questions and more. A few books of the many that we have are:

Outstanding olympics

Outstanding Olympics by Clive Gifford is a great general resource for both the summer and winter Olympic games. If your child has become enamoured of the concept of the Olympics, this is a great place to start, as well as introduce the concept of the seasonality of the sports offered at the Olympics. If your child is just starting to read independently and as of yet not read very many non-fiction books, start by introducing them to the index and table of contents, and explain that non-fiction books are not necessarily meant to be read cover to cover.

Gold medal for weird

For an entirely different take on the Olympics, try Gold Medal for Weird by Kevin Sylvester. This book explores the bloopers, scandals and cheating athletes that are, unfortunately,  part and parcel of the Olympic event. Kevin also includes some heart warming stories of sacrafice and surprise, to keep everyone interested. When this book was published it won a children's choice award, so it already has the approval of thousands of readers across the province.

Do curve balls really curve

If your child has become interested in sports trivia in general because of the coverage of the Olympics, this book might be of interest. Do Curve Balls Really Curve? by David Fischer explores 19 different sports and includes college level competition as well as professional level sports. As well, the book features a balance of both male and female sports, so it will have a great appeal for everyone.

Whatever the interests your children have in sports, we have a wealth of resources in both fiction and non-fiction books that will engage and inform them. Come and check us out!
