Doctors’ Advice
We often emphasize the importance of spending time with your children developing a love of reading. But don't just take it from us! Last week, just in time for Family Literacy Day the Canadian Paediatric Society released two new videos that emphasize just how important it is from a medical perspective as well.
For children under two years of age how much screen time is too much? The answer is any at all! Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Paediatric Society advise against any television, video game or device usage at all until your children are at least two years old -and even then no more than one or two hours a day. Nor should it become a regular part of a daily routine.
By contrast, reading, singing and speaking with your child are all things that the Canadian Paediatric Society strongly recommends incorporating into you and your child's daily routine. They also offer tips and developmental milestones related to early literacy.
In these videos, three pediatricians from across the country remind us how important reading speaking and singing are in brain development and learning. What's more they are crucial for forming good relationships with your children. They also suggest fun ideas to try with your child. My favourite? Take them to the library!
