Happy Geek Pride Day!
May 25th is the ninth Geek Pride Day celebrating fandom.
The date was selected in 2006 as the anniversary of the theatrical release of the very first Star Wars movie. It's also been Towel Day since 2001 (for fans of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and the Glorious 25th of May for fans of the recently deceased Terry Pratchett.
Here are a few FAQ's I have prepared in case you are wondering
Am I a geek? / Is my child a geek?
Well I certainly hope so!! You do not have to be fans of the above mentioned authors or films to count yourself proudly as a geek. You just have to be a little obsessive about something. For many the Harry Potter series will do quite nicely. Others may gravitate to comics (a term I use generically to include the even geekier "graphic books"). For my own part I am a bit of a fantasy geek.
Ok we're geeks. So how do we celebrate Geek Pride Day?
It's simple really. Just indulge yourself proudly in your obsession. Here are some readerly/writerly suggestions:
- Compose fan fiction.
- Dress up as your favourite accomplice of Count Olaf's.
- Write lyrics to your favourite video game theme music.
- Draw pictures of choice scenes from your favourite book, slip them between the pages where these scenes occur, and then loan (or give) the book to an unsuspecting friend.
- Start a discussion group.
- Check out a book on one of you're hobbies.
Is there anything on the Internet about Geek Pride Day?
I'm so glad you asked that. You bet! Geek Pride day STARTED on the internet(in Spanish).
