TD Summer Reading Club for Grownups?

Calling all caregivers: jump on the TD Summer Reading Club bandwagon. The days of sticker collecting or having pizza parties to celebrate reading accomplishments are over, but reading kids' books can still be rewarding. A few of this year's recommended reads work well as adult reading material:

Hokey pokey

Hokey Pokey by Jerry Spinelli is a coming of age story.  Well-written and metaphorical, readings of this book will certainly vary between the child and adult perspective. If you appreciate creative use of language, check out this book.

Bookspeak!  Poems About Books by Laura Purdie Salas is a whimsical collection. The striking illustrations are courtesy of TD Summer Reading Club’s feature artist Josée Bisaillon. Which poem is my favourite? Definitely "This is the Book."

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein has been likened to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Take a crack at solving the puzzles. This book beckons any adult who has ever dreamed about being locked in the library overnight…

Between Shadows by Kathleen Cook Waldron speaks to love, loss and family, which are relatable themes to any age group. As the family grapples with a life altering decision, the young protagonist asserts his own hopes and dreams for the future.

Many authors appreciate that writing for kids doesn't mean "writing down."  E.B. White confessed that he rarely had an audience in mind for his work. White focused on creating quality literature and left branding to publicists. In most cases, talking animals are equated with books for kids, excluding a classic example or two. That’s marketing at play, but it shouldn't restrict readers. Reading good books that appeal to a younger audience exposes you to a child's inner monologue. It might even bring you closer to the kids in your life.

Other so-called kids' books for the mature crowd:

Wonder by R.J Palacio Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell El Deafo by Cece Bell Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm Sisters by Raina Telgemeier Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo

  1. I also love to go back and re-read a favourite series. Some summers it is the Chronicles of Narnia others it is Anne of Green Gables. This summer I am rereading Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials.
