Reading is Sweet! Book Tasting this Family Literacy Month
Has the last page of a book “left you wanting more”? Has a book ever “left a bad taste in your mouth”? Have you “devoured” a story in one sitting?
I know, enough with the bad puns, Melanie! I’m simply trying to illustrate how books are like food. Sometimes they’re lip smacking, sometimes, not so much. But both taste and preference are personal, and developing one’s palette – whether we’re talking for food or books – requires time and patience.
For any child – and let’s face it, any adult – it can sometimes be challenging to find a book that they find interesting, captivating and just plain fun to read. A young person may be generally reluctant to read, or maybe unable to find the right book, author or genre to salivate over. While disheartening for the child and paren't, there’s hope! There’s always the friendly children’s staff at your library who can chat with your child and recommend great titles. Then, there’s Book Tasting…
Book Tasting (or a Reading Café or Book Buffet) is a free program for the family that a number of our branches will be hosting in the coming week. You and your +1, (or +2, or +3…) are cordially invited to join us. Families will visit the library and can expect it to look restaurant- or café-like. Guests will meet with library staff and “sample” (that is, read a few pages from) different books and “order” different genres of books from the menu. This friendly and welcoming environment exposes families to different genres and authors, and encourages feedback about what interests them about reading.

We hope you'll join us! Some, but not all, Book Tasting programs require an RSVP. Be sure to check with each branch for specific details.
Bon appétit!
