Happy New Year & Happy Family Literacy Month!
January marks Family Literacy Month at Toronto Public Library, and we’re inviting you and your brood to join in our celebration! We’ve planned a month packed with fun, free programs to enjoy at our library branches, designed a contest to participate in and assembled a list of wonderful reads for the family.
Did you know that engaging in literacy activities as a family improves a child’s literacy skills, and also helps adults keep their skills sharp? It’s not hard to find time to develop literacy skills – simply turn everyday activities into learning experiences! All month we’ll suggest family literacy activities here and on Twitter (look out for the hashtag #FamilyLiteracy). There are always grocery lists to write, silly songs to sing, board games to play and fantastical stories to tell…together!
Another fun feature of Family Literacy Month at TPL is our Family Literacy Bingo activity. And, yes, there are prizes to be won! Download a Family Literacy Bingo card (PDF) now, or pick one up at your local library branch. The card poses nine reading challenges for the family to complete together. Accomplish each activity, mark them off on the card, then submit the card to your library branch. You’ll then be entered in a draw to win one of four Family Fun Packs, which includes two books and two board games.
How do you and your family explore and develop literacy every day?
