Parrots Sit on Carrots and Other Rhymes
Books with rhyme and rhythm makes reading fun for children and helps them to develop the ability to hear the smaller sounds in words. Being able to hear the smaller sounds helps build pre-reading skills.
Here are some picture books with some rhyming words that you can enjoy with children 3-6 years old.
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr.Seuss
Illama, Illama, Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
I'm a Dirty Dinosaur by Janeen Brian and Ann James
Oi Frog! By Kes Gray and Jim Field
Parts by Ted Arnold
Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas
Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw
Teddy Bears, Teddy Bears by Harriet Ziefert
The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland
Even nonsense words and sentences help children learn new words and have fun reading. I've pulled an excerpt from Oi Frog! to show you how much fun rhyming can be. Positive, fun and playful experiences with books are important in children feeling that reading is enjoyable. When children have fun reading (which is especially true for books with silly rhymes), they will want to read more.
Activity Idea!
You can also have fun playing with words by starting a rhyming journal with your child. Pick a word each day and find rhyming words with your child. Ask you child, "what rhymes with car?" Together, you can come up with words including far, star, far, etc. Record these in the book and after a month, you will have a book filled with new words that your child will feel proud of discovering.
Children also learn through singing and playing. Singing rhymes and songs together during the day is another great way to incorporate new (rhyming) words in a playful manner. Sing Raffi’s "Brush Your Teeth" after brushing with your child, sing "The Eensy, Weensy Spider" when it rains or sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" right before bed.
Happy Rhyming!
