Free Hugs – Celebrating National Hugging Day

Everybody could use a hug now and then…

…so in celebration of National Hugging Day, which took place on January 21, here are some books about hugs that you can borrow for free at your local Toronto Public Library.

I Hug by David McPhail (Ages 3-5)

I'm Going to Give You a Bear Hug! by Caroline B. Cooney (Ages 2-6)

I Need a Hug by Aaron Blabey (Ages 4-6) (Also available in French)

How Do You Hug a Porcupine? by Laurie Isop (Ages 4-7)

Hug Machine by Scott Campbell (Ages 4-7)

Hug This Book! by Barney Saltzberg (Ages 2-5) (Also a great way to celebrate Family Literacy Month!)

…and after you've enjoyed some literary hugs why not send a different kind of hug by making this craft?

Craft supplies including string, paper, marker, scissors, and tape.

To make a "sendable" hug you will need string, paper, a marker, scissors, tape and you!

Use a marker to trace an outline of both of your hands on to a piece of paper.

Make sure that the length of string that you cut is the same size as your real hug would be by holding it, from end to end, in your outstretched arms.

Hands cut out of paper and a length of string.

Cut out the paper outline of each of your hands (separately) and tape on the string, attaching one end to each hand.

Envelope with "For: My Friend" written on it and the finished sendable hug craft.

Write a message on the hands and then you're ready to send this "virtual" hug to a friend!

Oh! And just in case you need one more hug, here's a little one from me to you!
