June 23 To-Do: Join TD Summer Reading Club and Get Your Summer Read On!
Does your family’s Saturday To-Do List typically start like this?:
- Laundry, laundry, laundry
- Ballet rehearsal
- Soccer practice
- Groceries
- Wonder “Where did my Saturday go?”
May I suggest one more teeny, tiny item this week? I promise it’s an easy task. This Saturday, June 23 is Get Your Summer Read On Day at Toronto Public Library, which is the official start of our TD Summer Reading Club. If your child registers for the Club this Saturday at a participating TPL branch, they’ll be entered in a draw to win a pair of tickets to see a Toronto Blue Jays home game this summer from the TD Clubhouse at Rogers Centre. So we’re talking about a behind home plate sightline, and an incredible view of the entire field!
Now I wouldn’t want your child to register for the TD Summer Reading Club just for the chance to win those tickets. The Club is a really fun way for your kid to keep reading, in whatever format they like best, no matter where the summer takes them. They can explore any topic they’re passionate about, plow through the latest, greatest series and discover new favourite authors. We’ll give them a free notebook to keep track of their reading, and a web access code to explore tdsummerreadingclub.ca, which is chock full of games, eBooks, jokes, recommended reads and opportunities to share book reviews with kids across the country.
Of course, MY favourite part of the TD Summer Reading Club is that kids are invited to come into their local branch, and tell us about what they’ve been reading. We love to hear children express why they love a character, whether they recommend we read the story and, sometimes, why they didn’t like a particular book (hey, it happens!). When a child tells us about a book they’ve read this summer, we’ll give them a sticker for their Club notebook, or any place special.
If your child reads and speaks in French, be sure to ask staff about the French Reading Challenge at your branch. The Club is accessible for kids of all abilities, too, and there are many ways for them to participate.
TD Summer Reading Club is one piece of Summer Wonder at Toronto Public Library. Wonder, create and discover all summer at our set of free programs and activities designed to build skills, discover new interests, meet friends and, most importantly, have fun. See you soon!
