Celebrate International Literacy Day at the Library

September 7, 2018 | Teresa | Comments (0)

September 8th is International Literacy Day (ILD). Established by UNESCO on October 26, 1966, ILD aims to "remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society."

Developing literacy skills in your child is one of the most important things you can do as a paren't. In fact, studies show that a higher reading proficiency by age 15 can lead to reaching higher levels of education, lower levels of unemployment, and a higher income by the age of twenty five.

Child reading on bench

We here at the library take your child's literacy very seriously. From birth to their teen years and beyond, the Toronto Public Library has a variety of programs and services that can help every child develop a lifetime love of reading.

Ready for Reading

Ready for Reading is a suite of programs and services specifically designed for children from birth to five years of age. Our ever popular storytimes fall under this category, and they are a great way to introduce books to your child. They are also filled with great tips and tricks to help you get your child ready for reading. Can't make it to storytime? No problem. Come into any branch and borrow a copy of our Let's Get Ready for Reading Guide. It is chock-full of great rhymes, activities and books to help turn you into a storytime pro.

KidsStop

A great way to help improve your child's literacy is by reading together, and there is no better place to do this than at the library! Visit one of our KidsStops, specifically designed early literacy centres that encourage hands on learning and exploration. Your local branch doesn't have a KidsStop? No worries. Drop into any one of our 100 branches to find the perfect spot to read together.

Leading to Reading

Leading to Reading is a free program open to children in Grades 1-6 who are reading below their grade level. Each week, students meet up with a volunteer who can help them with their reading, writing, or homework. Not every branch hosts Leading to Reading so be sure to check out our website for participating branches and schedules.

KidsSpace

KidsSpace is our website for children. Here, you can find book recommendations, get homework help, and so much more. But did you know that we also have a Grownups section? In, it you will find a plethora of resources to help you raise a reader. So check it out today.

Books and so much more!

If you are looking for books on how to raise a reader then you have come to the right place. But anyone who comes to the library knows that we are so much more than just books. We have DVDs, CDs, e-resources, magazines, and more. By signing your child up for a free library card you are giving them the best gift possible, the gift of literacy. So visit any one of our 100 branches today, and let us help you get started on your reading journey together!
