Grab Your Telescope! It’s Science Literacy Week!
Did you know that this week, September 17-23, is Science Literacy Week (SLW)? Science Literacy Week is a week-long celebration of science and space in Canada, presented in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency.
SLW highlights Canada’s outstanding scientists and science communicators from coast-to-coast. The goals are to showcase the excellence and diversity of Canadian science and to show how exciting science is. The week offers something for everyone! For one week in September, libraries, universities, museums and other partners put on a spectacular nationwide festival of science.

2017’s SLW week included over 800 events in 100 cities coast to coast. From public talks to explosive chemistry demos, stargazing sessions to nature hikes there was a little bit of everything for science lovers of all ages. Support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) makes the week possible.

In 2018, SLW has partnered with the Canadian Space Agency to highlight the exploration of space and the cosmos. December marks the launch of Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques to the International Space Station, so you’re encouraged to take part by doing as many space related activities as possible – attend a public talk, go to a stargazing session, make a model rocket and more. The magic of the universe is accessible to everyone!
