Find Some New Picture Books to Love This Valentine’s Day
On February 14th Valentine’s Day will be upon us! It’s time to cuddle up with a loved one and read a book that celebrates love in one of many forms. Your local branch may be fresh out of Valentine’s Day seasonal titles this time of year, but this book list offers suggestions of books that are still available and celebrate love in many forms!
I suggest you plan your visit to pick up your Valentine’s Day books around a time your local branch is hosting a Ready for Reading Storytime. Enjoy some classic Valentine’s Day read-alouds and crafts all Valentine’s week long.
My Paren'ts and Caregivers love me
These titles focus on how much love paren'ts and caregivers have for the children in their lives. They are perfect to snuggle up with on cold winter days.
No matter what by Debi Gliori.
That's me loving you by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
The I love you book by Todd Parr.
Love Between Siblings
If you have a sibling you know there are a lot of ups and downs: I have a younger brother, I know how it is! But those of us with siblings are also very lucky. We have someone to walk the path of life with us and share experiences with along the way. Siblings can grow very deep bonds for one another and show love like no one else! These picture books explore those complicated, and loving relationships.
Owl babies by Martin Waddell.
Maple & Willow together by Lori Nichols.
Flora's very windy day by Jeanne Birdsall.
Expressions of LGBTQ+ Love
There are so many beautiful picture books that explore love in the LGBTQ+ community that I could easily have dedicated an entire booklist to this topic alone! But here are a few of my favourite books that are perfect for Valentine’s Day that your child will be sure to enjoy.
Heather has two mommies by Lesléa Newman.
And Tango makes three by Justin Richardson.
A day in the life of Marlon Bundo by Jill Twiss.
Love and Friendship
We may not all be lucky enough to have a sibling, but at some point in our lives we just might be lucky enough to experience making a true friend! These picture books are some of my favourite stories that demonstrate empathy and love between friends.
Boo Hoo Bird by Jeremy Tankard.
Hug time By Patrick McDonnell.
Lost and found by Oliver Jeffers.
Lesser Known Valentine’s Classics
I will leave you with a few of my favourite Valentine’s Day stories. These are ones I often share in my Ready for Reading Storytimes during Valentine’s Day. I’m sure many of you have favourite classics as well and I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
Sweet hearts by Jan Carr.
Love, Splat by Rob Scotton.
Love the world by Todd Parr.
