Happy Canada Book Day – April 23, 2019
Today, April 23, is Canada Book Day. It is also World Book Day! Every year on this day we celebrate authors and the books they write.
Of course, this is something that the Toronto Public Library does every day, so how is this different? Well, today we might just want to emphasize the wonderful Canadian authors we have.
Since it is also Poetry month, I am going to start with Dennis Lee. He has been writing very Canadian poems for over 25 years, such as "Bump on Your Thumb" from the marvellous Alligator Pie.
Who shall be king of the little kids' swing?
Jimmy's the king of the little kids' swing
With a bump on your thumb
And a thump on your bum
And a tickle my tum in Toronto.
Sleeping Dragons All Around may not sound Canadian but when it is a book of poetry written by Nova Scotia native Sheree Fitch, it certainly is.
Counting in Mi'kmaw = Mawkiljemk Mi'kmawiktuk is a vibrant and beautiful book by Mi’kmaq artist Loretta Gould which introduces numbers through traditional Mi'kmaw images.
Africville by Shauntay Grant is the story of a former settlement in Halifax as seen through the eyes of a young child who imagines what it would have been like when it was an active community.
Annie and Simon: Banana Muffins and other stories by Catharine O'Neill is a fun look at a little girl and her teenage brother in an Easy Reader format.
And finally, let's end with Colossal Canada : 100 epic facts and feats by Elizabeth MacLeod and Frieda Wishinsky This will give children lots to cheer about.
Happy Canada Book Day!
