This Book Is Spinless By Lindsay Leslie and Alice Brereton

This Book Is Spineless: (Yes, Yes I Am) by Lindsay Leslie and illustrated by Alice Brereton. (Ages 4-8).

The book is the protagonist of the story, and with each turn of the page it is scared of what will happen next. This book is spineless and a self-described "scaredy-pants." In this story it is the reader who takes the reluctant book on an adventure. The reader and the book try to figure out what the story is by using the 5 senses – hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste. By the end of the story the book is feeling a little more fearless and exclaims "I must be growing a spine!"…but we need to make sure we leave the light on.

Seal at the Wheel

Seal at the Wheel by Lesley Sims and illustrated by David Semple. (Ages 6-7)

Unfortunately, Seal is scaring everyone else in the water and they are getting upset. But all that changes when there is an accident! Seal has to use her speed boat to get to the monkeys whose boat is sinking. The rhyming text makes this book a fun read for children who are learning to read on their own. At the end of the book there is back matter on phonics and how rhyming helps develop phonemic awareness.
