Reading in French for Fun!
Well, we are halfway through the summer, which still leaves plenty of time for your children to read in French and submit book reports at any Toronto Public Library (TPL) branch.
TPL has lots of great books, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as comics and magazines in French to explore over the summer. Whether your children enjoy reading Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or the Smurfs in French, there are a lot of options to choose from. Summer is a great time to encourage your children to read for fun, not for school. Plus reading in French will help them retain more of their French. Looking for French programs and events to take your children to? Try one of the wonderful free French activities at one of our library branches.
Here are some great titles to check out with your kids.
Books for Younger Kids
The popular Peppa Pig series is available in French. If your child knows Peppa from English books and television, they might like to try reading Peppa in French.
Pete the Cat becomes Pat le Chat. The humour and rhyming that kids love in the Pete is available in French with Pat.
Robert Munsch is a Canadian children's author rock star and we have lots of his books in French, as well as other languages.
Pugs are pretty cute. Pig the Pug becomes Carlos in French and he continues to have his really fun and cheeky adventures.
Books for Older kids
The Hibou Hebdo series (Owl Diaries in English) are great for kids who are ready to tackle chapter books, but still like having some illustrations.
Réfugiés by Alan Gratz is a great read for kids who enjoy learning about history. This story jumps from Jewish people fleeing Germany in the 1930s to people fleeing Syria today.
At the end of the day, we want your children to enjoy reading in French, just like they do in any other language. We hope these suggestions will give you a great place to start.
Happy reading!
