Four Ways to Prevent the Summer Slide
Many children forget some of what they've learned during the summer months. Combat this phenomenon known as the Summer Slide at the Toronto Public Library this summer.
Research has shown that Summer Learning Loss is especially dire for low-income families. This Summer Slide phenomenon can mean losing more than two months in academic achievement over summer vacation. Thanks to Toronto Public Library's free and accessible programs and resources, you can now turn brain drain into brain gain.
Here are four ways you can prevent Summer Slide for your children:
1. Attend our Free Children's Summer Camps and Workshops
Check out Sumaiya's post about our free children's programs and camps you can attend at the Library. These include animation workshops, STEM programs, STEAMlabs workshops, week-long Art Camps, Coding Camps, Magic Camps, Civic Design Camps and more.
Shout out to our specially curated Wonder Workshop. Children will learn about the Science Topic of Animal Adaptation through an interactive lesson and information found in Shell, Beak, Tusk by Bridget Heos. The program idea is based on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) award-winning novel The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Participants will be guided through a design-thinking process to create their own creatures. Reinforce Science knowledge and develop skills learned in school by registering for a workshop near you. To top it off, attendees will get a chance to win a brand new copy of The Wild Robot.
2. Read, Watch and Listen to Books
Read with your children. Research has shown tremendous values in Summer Reading and the prevention of the Summer Slide.
