Sharing a Smile on Knock Knock Joke Day: October 31, 2019
Halloween Trick or Treating might not be the only reason that you’ll want to knock on someone’s door on Octorber 31. It’s also National Knock Knock Joke Day!

Knock-knock jokes often serve as one of a child’s first introductions to humour. And whether they make you grin or groan, you never really outgrow their punny silliness.

The familiar structure of a knock knock joke also make it easy to make up one of your own. They always start off with “Knock Knock” and then the responding “Who’s there?” Then you simply add in who is there, for example, “Kanga”. When the querying response comes back again, this time adding an echo of who you said was at the door, e.g. "Kanga who?", you finish off with the punch line which usually includes some witty wordplay: "Actually it's kangaroo!" (I found that joke and other funnies in an article called "The Best Knock-Knock Jokes for Kids" on the website FamilyMinded.) And because these types of jokes are set up “call and response” style, they are perfect to share or tell with a friend.

One of my favourites is Knock, Knock! Done in picture book style, it includes jokes retold and illustrated by fourteen "wacky & talented" artists including Dan Yaccarino, Peter H. Reynolds, Chris Raschka, and Laurie Keller. (Be sure to check out the last two pages to find out who the contributing artists would want to be knocking on their doors!)
