March 8: International Women’s Day
Sorry, this program is FULL.
This year, we are celebrating the centenary of International Women's Day. In 1911, International Women's Day (IWD) was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19th. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace. Following the United Nations' lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women's Day (IWD).
The 2011 Canadian theme for International Women's Day and Week 2011 is Girls' Rights Matter – equality and access to opportunity for all girls and women throughout their lives. The United Nations theme this year is related – "Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women".
Women, join us on Tuesday, March 8th, at Lillian H. Smith branch for an evening of celebration, inspiring stories, entertainment and empowerment! Featured speakers: Hon. Jean Augustine (Ontario Office of Fairness Commissioner) & Connie Guberman (Status of Women Officer, University of Toronto).
