Sandy beaches in Toronto!
It's hard to believe that such a big city has swimming beaches, but it does. We Torontonians are very lucky because we can go to the beach by hopping on a bus or a streetcar. We can swim, picnic, walk along the shore, play volleyball or just relax with our toes in the sand.
Cherry Beach is at the foot of Cherry Street, not far from the south end of the Don Valley Parkway. In the summer there is bus service to reach it. There are picnic tables and barbeques and a beautiful view of Toronto Island.
Woodbine Beach has been open for swimming since 1897. It is at the south end of Woodbine Avenue and you can walk there in 5 minutes from the Queen streetcar.
Toronto Island has several beaches including Ward's Island beach, which has the cleanest water of all the beaches. To get there, you take a ferry boat across Toronto Harbour and then walk across a baseball field to reach it. It is very quiet and great for families.
If you want to check the water quality of any of Toronto's beaches (say, after a heavy rainstorm), just call the beach Hotline: 416-392-7161. The water is tested every day during the summer.
