Canadian Citizenship: Who can apply ?

October 30, 2010 | Janice | Comments (1)

You've been living in Canada for a while and you think it is probably time to think about becoming a citizen — after all, you want to vote in elections, right ?  And get a Canadian passport ?  Well, the last post suggested finding out if your home country allows you to keep your citizenship and therefore allows dual citizenship with Canada.  The next step is to establish if you are one of those who can apply

You are eligible to apply for citizenship if you meet the requirements in these areas:

  • age
  • permanent resident status
  • time lived in Canada
  • language abilities
  • criminal history (prohibitions)
  • knowledge of Canada

For all the information about these requirements, go to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.   You want to make sure that you understand them all perfectly.

For instance, "time lived in Canada" can be a bit tricky:  adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years, or 1,095 days in the past four years, to be eligible.   There is a calculator on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website to help you figure out whether you have been in Canada the correct number of days.

Once you know that you are eligible to apply for citizenship, the next step is HOW to apply.  Stay tuned !
