Canadian Citizenship: the test

So, you mailed your application and documents and received the acknowledgement letter. Some time after that (6 months maximum) you would receive another letter, inviting you to visit one of the CIC locations to take the citizenship test. The test is usually written, and meant to verify your knowledge of Canada and ability to communicate in one of official languages.

All you need to prepare for the test is the official study guide, "Discover Canada" – you can read it online, download a copy, or even listen to audio version. You can borrow a copy from the library, too!

On our website you can also find sample questions and other resources (for example, you can find out who was elected to the provincial parliament from your district). More sample questions can be found here or here.

IMPORTANT: the citizenship test has changed in March 2010, so please make sure that you DO NOT use any study material from before that!

And, what if you didn't pass?… don't worry πŸ™‚ You would have to appear for an interview with a citizenship judge and only if you fail the interview too, then you have to start the whole process over.

So, you successfully passed the citizenship test. Are you a Canadian Citizen now?… No πŸ™‚ What else needs to be done? Find out in our next post πŸ™‚

  1. I think I am beyond your “6 months” maximum: They sent me the guide about 6 months after I sent the application end of April 2010. My file was transferred to Scarborough in February and I have not heard from CIC since I received the study guide and acknowlegement letter.

  3. Hi Maria,
thank you for your comment on the library’s “New to Canada” blog.
It is best to contact CIC Call Centre at 1-888-242‑2100 if you have any questions about your application. On their website there is a statement that “each case is different and processing times may vary.”
The CIC Toronto (St. Clair) office is located at 55 St. Clair Avenue East, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M4T 1L8, Monday to Friday: 8:00 – 16:00

Could you please tell me how long will it take?
Does it take the same time as I promoted my files the first time to the government or is it gonna take more time or will it take less time because its my second time.
