Staying Safe for Summer

Yesterday, June 21st marked the first day of summer.

With summer days approaching, it is a time of peaceful walks along the lake, gentle strolls in lush green Toronto parks, and cool refreshing swims in the free public pools throughout our city. However, in all this beautiful warm weather, there are some things that we must remember.

The importance of sun protection

With the increased exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, it is vital to apply and continuously re-apply sun block or sunscreen to protect the skin from harm. Using products with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) will help to make your summer sun safe. For information of what products can work best for you, drop by a pharmacy and talk to a pharmacist. Other items that may also aid in sun protection are hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas.

Have a look at some of these great links to help understand the importance of sun protection:

To cool down on a hot day, swimming and dipping in a pool is the preferred choice of many.  The pool and the beach are great places to be at during the summer weather, but it is equally important to be aware of water safety. Knowing your limits, doing what you are comfortable with, swimming in safe areas, and using a life jacket are some ways that will make you feel at ease and allow you to enjoy your time in the water.

If you have children, consider checking out one of these books on water safety for kids:

The importance of road safety

As the temperature rises and the weather warms up, there is an increase in the number of people driving, bicycling, and walking. If you decide to bicycle, remember the rules of the road and to always look before you go. Understanding the traffic signs and road markings, controlling your bicycle, staying clear of pedestrians and cars, and wearing a safety helmet will greatly increase your safety and comfort when bicycling in traffic.

Remember that there will be days that will be extremely hot. In these heat alerts, make sure you keep cool by finding a cooling centre such as an air-conditioned shopping mall or your local public library. All 99 branches of the Toronto Public Library are equipped with air conditioning and are safe and comfortable spaces that everyone is welcome to enjoy.

Beat the heat this season by having some summer sense and remembering that staying safe in the sun, water, and road will ultimately allow you to fully enjoy your summer.
