Toronto (Monday, June 22, 2009) – For most of Toronto Public Library’s 99 branches, it will be business as usual during the City labour disruption. However, some branches that are located in shared facilities with City services will close for the duration of the city’s labour dispute.

Five branches will be closed and, with the exception of the Leading to Reading program and the Settlement and Education Partnership in Toronto (SEPT) program, all programs and services normally offered will be cancelled. The book drops at these branches will close. Fines will be waived for books due at the closed branch for the duration of the labour disruption.

  1. Please be aware that picketers were blocking entry to City Hall yesterday (Monday). A number of people waited in line to use the City Hall Library. I was told the wait would be 30 minutes, but after 30 minutes was advised that they were only letting 1 person in every 5 minutes (and there was 1 hour worth of people ahead of me).
Since this type of service disruption was not mentioned above, I thought it would be best to let people know that this was happening.

  2. Hi S,
We are sorry that you were inconvenienced during your visit to the City Hall branch. We’re working hard to ensure that we maintain the best service possible during the City strike, which has impacted a few library branches.
Thank you for the suggestion to inform customers about the delays. We will update our website and have installed a drop box for returned materials by the entrance to City Hall.
Again, we’re sorry you were inconvenienced and thank you for the feedback.

  3. Hi Behfar,
Thanks for your message about the City Hall library branch. To clarify, the branch remains open during the City strike with adjusted hours of service: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  4. Yesterday at Deer Park I was told that the library was open, but that they were not accepting book returns or checking books out. Is this work to rule unique to Deer Park, or across the branches?

  5. Yesterday at Deer Park Branch I was told that although the building was open, the workers would not be accepting returns or checking out books. Is this work to rule standard at all branches or just this one?

  6. Is there anyway we can move holds from one library to another once they have arrived? I tried twice to go pick up holds at the city hall branch, just to be held up too long.

  7. I tried to return a book today but my local branch is closed due to the strike. The external dropbox was locked. Will I still have to pay a fine?

  8. Hi Carol,
We experienced a problem with our library circulation system on Monday and Tuesday (June 22 and 23) which meant that library staff were limited in how they could circulate and check in material. Staff were accepting returns although they may not have been checked in until later and generally they were able to check out material as long as customers had their library cards. Library staff are not on strike, nor are they working to rule. We apologize for any inconvenience you experienced at the Deer Park Branch.

  10. I live next to Flemingdon Park Library.I have some books that are overdue due to the strike.I also have to pick-up some items from Don Mills Library. If I managed to reach DM Library and chose to returned the overdue books,
will the charges be waived because FP Library is affected by the strike, or will not be waived because DM Library is not affected by the stike. Will I have to wait for Flemingdon Park Library to open so I can return the overdue books, even if I’m visiting another library?

  15. Hi Jana,
We’re waiving fines for books due at closed branches for the duration of the labour disruption, so you could wait until the end of the strike to return books that you checked out at St. James Town. The books that you picked up from other branches won’t be exempt from fines.
An option is to return books to the nearby Parliament Street branch, which is located at 269 Gerrard St. E. if that’s convenient for you. You could return the books to any TPL branch that isn’t closed during the City strike (see the chart above for a listing of five branches that are closed).

  16. Can you please explain how one is to get access to requested books that are ‘on hold’ at a closed library? Is there any way to have the books transferred to a location that is open? I use the St James Town Library and have holds to pick up – is this even possible right now?
    Thank you.
