Studying for a Profession or Trade?
Are you considering a career as a health professional? Most faculties of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry require candidates to write aptitude tests when applying to their programs. You can find books to help you prepare for the MCAT, PCAT and DAT at many library locations. Type any of these acronyms in the library catalogue searchbox to get a list of prep books.
In the Science & Technology Department (5th floor)of the North York Central Library, we keep copies of many of these books in our study guide collection. Ask for them at the information desk. They are for use in the library only.
Foreign-trained professionals and others who need to pass licensing exams use the study guides as well. Here are some examples of books health professionals can find in this collection:

The Study Guide Collection isn’t just for health professionals. We have material to help people prepare for tests in other fields as well, including engineering and many of the skilled trades, such as electrician, plumber, and HVAC technician. Whether you are studying to become a cosmetologist or hairdesser, an automotive technician or air traffic controller, a civil or electrical engineer, we have books to help you prepare for your exams as well. Can’t get to the library to use these study guides? Did you know that you can find many practice tests for the trades and professions, as well as aptitude tests, in the Learning Express Library? This online resources is available through the Toronto Public Library website; once you sign in using your library card you have access to aptitude, certification and licensing practice tests for a variety of trades and professions. Go to the College Students tab and look under Graduate School Entrance Exams Preparation for MCAT practice exams and PCAT practice tests. The Jobs & Careers tab links you to practice tests for a wide variety of certification exams, including ones for veterinary and dental assistants, electricians and plumbers, EMTs and firefighters:
Finally, did you know that there is a bookable group study room on the 5th floor? It can accomodate up to six people, and can be booked up to one week in advance for a morning, afternoon or evening session. Ideal for study groups. Call (416)395-5649 to reserve.
