Rediscovering Toronto’s Historic Gems

Recently, I met up with a friend who told me of her recent ‘rediscover’ Toronto vacation.

I was Distillery-1918wondering to myself – what was there to discover? She lived here all her life! CN Tower, Centre Island, she has seen it all.  By joining local heritage tours, she rediscovered her deep appreciation of history.  Always a thrill seeker, she toured the Distillery District on a Segway, a self-balancing two wheeled scooter. If you don’t like the action, check out iTours by Heritage Toronto where you can learn about your neighbourhood’s past from the comfort of your home.

With rumours of city museum closures (two located in North York), it is important to remind ourselves of the rich cultural heritage we have so close but that can sometimes be overshadowed by some of Toronto’s more popular attractions.  These relics remind us of the people and events that shaped Toronto of today.

To learn more about the local history of North York, look no further than the Canadiana Department at North York Central Library.  Our North York History Collection includes newspapers, photographs, maps, and scrapbooks just to name a few.

Every neighbourhood in Toronto has a story to tell, so don’t forget to check out the local history collections at your nearest library.
