Toronto_Rocket_316Ride the new rocket!

This morning as I was riding the sleek new Bombardier rocket style TTC, I was thinking "perfect timing, tonight is our program" Transit Around the World featuring author Taras Grescoe. I love the design of the new subways, they're nice and clean, spacious, you can walk from one end to the other, the list goes on.

Eco-friendly-travel-6How about a bike ride through the city?

For those of you who don't know April is Keep Toronto Reading month at the library, with over 100 events happening at library branches. We're asking you what you're reading and where? Tonight from 7:00 – 8:30, we are focusing on the theme of public transit with Taras Grescoe who wrote Straphanger a book focussing on the post-automobile age. Over the weekend there was an interesting article in the Globe & Mail titled Global Gridlock about the book Straphanger. So, a straphanger is someone who is a lifelong user of public transport which many of us are in Toronto - I just finished driving school at the ripe old age of 26 and a lot of my friends don't drive either.

So, come join us tonight and learn about the post-automobile age (unless of course you drive a car that's powered by 100% vegetable oil). How do you stay eco friendly?

  1. This book sounds very interesting and although I have never heard the term ”straphanger” I guess I would qualify as one. I have lived in the city for 22 years now and at the age of 32 I have never driven a car. There are times that I wish I knew how to drive for the convenience. But I find that living downtown and having access to 24 hour transit is holding me back from ever getting a licence.

  2. Sorry you missed the program, I guess you’re a straphanger just like me, except I’m getting my license so I can have the option to drive and live outside of the city now, thanks for your input!

  3. Thank you @driving lessons for your input, you’re right there’s a lot of pollution from cars, you notice it especially at this time of the year with all the humidity and smog – makes it hard to breathe for some. Vegetable oil would be a whole lot cheaper too!

  4. Thanks Mario all the way from Quebec! By the way, I love Quebec’s public transportation – very efficient. That’s very interesting just today in the paper I read that GO Transit is planning on electrifying their GO trains in Ontario within the next 10 years.
