Free Science Events in Toronto for December 2014
The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the December calendar (PDF).
December's highlights include:
- December 4: Earth Exhales: A Volatile History, part of the Earth Sciences Seminar Series at the University of Toronto.
- December 7: What is Happening with Monarch Butterflies? Citizen scientist Don Davies describes the current situation of monarch butterflies and what we can do to help.
- December 18: Safe Winter Driving, learn what is required to maintain and regain control over your vehicle in specific types of skids, the vital principle of the natural laws of motion and your vehicle's limitations, and recommended winter tune-ups.

December's highlights include:
- December 2: Your Brain on Speed: How the Brain Responds to the Rush Hour of Life, at Annette Street branch. A series on how busy lives, the daily time crunch and the multiple roles of the "sandwich generation" and technology impact the brain health of adults.
- December 3: Baby Foods, at Eatonville branch. A discussion on when to introduce new foods to baby and how to make nourishing meals using the best ingredients.
- December 4: What's in an Outbreak? An Overview of Ebola and Infectious Disease, at Bloor/Gladstone branch. Graduate students from the University of Toronto want to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding the Ebola virus.
- December 9: HTML & CSS for Beginners 1 , at Fort York branch. Learn how websites are created and the underlying code of the Internet. Using just a text editor you'll learn how to create a simple web page with content, hyperlinks, images and more.
- December 10: The Allergy-Free Cook: Laurie Sadowski, at Brentwood branch. In this presentation, cookbook author Laurie Sadowski will describe the details surrounding the different gluten-free flours, success substitutions without dairy, eggs and soy, adapting and customizing favourite recipes, creating baked goods that taste just like the real thing, and sticking to healthful ingredients.
